Barahona

Barahona, the great city from the south of the Dominican Republic is an open door to the natural paradise of its beaches and of La Sierra de Bahoruco.

Their  population today is more than 170.000 habitants, are extremely cordial. The Malecón  is the great center of meeting in the late afternoons, the breeze of the bay and the smell of sea conjugates with the frantic activity that has this walk.

Their main  Holiday is dedicated to  the Virgin of the Rosario, and it congregate thousands of barahoneros every October 7 of each year.

María Montez – one of the greatest stars from Movies- was born in Barahona. She was daughter of a Spanish father and a Dominican mother.  When she was young, she traveled to the United States and years later became one of the biggest actress of the Classic Hollywood.  She starred more than twenty movies like “Ali Baba and the 40 thieves” and “Nights of Arabia”.

Barahona was one of the principal ports of exportation of sugar in the Caribbean and today it continues being  one of the most important places that produces coffee, the plaster, the bauxite, wood and wax.

The only mine of “Larimar” that exists in the world  was discovered few kilometers from the city. The Larimar is a semiprecious stone of blue color as the sea worked by more than 200 craftsmen in the country.

A Museum dedicated to this gem was inaugurated in 2005 at the colonial zone of the capital, Santo Domingo, where they show them and sell samples at places and tourists.

The road 44 along Barahona’s Costa Azul offers us and spectacular landscape in the Dominican Republic. From one  side we can see the exuberant vegetation of the tropical jungle of Bahoruco’s Saw and of other one the beaches that appear to the blue water turquoise of the Caribbean sea along this tracing. Juan Esteban, Bahoruco, Paradise and Enriquillo are some of the fishing villages who are on the coast.

The main beaches are:San Rafael, El Quemaíto, Saladilla, Los Patos and Paraíso. San Rafael beach is of the most crowded, its waters are brave and the young people amuse themselves with the coming and going of its waves. The river San Rafael ends in the beach. Its  waters are dammed forming agreeable swimming pools of crystalline water that provoke an invigorating bath.

SIERRA DE BAHORUCO

Important jungles and parks are in Sierra de Bahoruco. The sights and landscapes from there are spectacular. Big mountains appear to the sea and contemplating its sights from them it is a special sensation. There are beautiful views from el Mirador Paraíso and the Vía Cabral Polo, the biological reservation Father Michael Domingo Fuertes and the National Park Donald Dodd, which form  part of the National System of Protected Areas.

BARAHONA

One of the Barahona’s most popular attractions is the Magnetic Pole, this place is located in between the towns of Las Auyamas and Polo, where it is possible to see a car mysteriously to raise a slope with the engine switched off and without nobody pushing it.
